If considering this netbook - especially those that come with mobile broadband contracts - please be advised that there are different versions of this machine available. The higher spec models come with an HD decoder and a higher resolution screen however those offered on broadband contracts won't have the HD decoder and come with the standard netbook resolution. So be warned!
Compared to my now ancient Asus Eee PC 904HD, my new Dell 1012 zips along at a decent enough speed and while it's nothing compared to my big Samsung, its able enough for using the internet, watching movies and other simple tasks. Everything else is standard netbook fare: 1gb RAM, 160gb Hard drive, 1.66 GHz Atom processor (though of the newer 450 kind rather than the old N270) and three USB ports. The latter are worryingly tight so could easily break off and ruin the port thus meaning a new motherboard.
The lid, being the usual very high gloss, is a complete fingerprint magnet and the shiny screen reflects everything around you unless you're in complete darkness but the machine does look very pretty. The textured surface surrounding the keyboard certainly looks cooler than on the previous mini 10's and the white sides and underneath are also very attractive. The keys are certainly better than on my old Asus however the Dell doesn't feel as tangibly strong. Maybe this is just me handling my new gadget with kid gloves and whether it really is tough enough I guess only time will tell. Disappointingly, there's no protective neoprene sleeve in the box so you'll have to buy one separately (I bought mine from Tesco, the thickest netbook sleeve I've ever seen). As above, you may need a thick sleeve with this machine.
